A public-private-partnership project was initiated in 2009 in order to improve the energy efficiency of the Barcelona Opera House. The aim of the project was to reduce electricity and thermal energy consumption and related costs. The project was implemented between 2009 and 2015 and was structured in two phases. The first phase consisted of one year during which an analysis was carried out to identify energy efficiency measures. Energy investment and management were carried out during the second 5-year phase. Interventions consisted of retrofitting of the chiller system by using oil free magnetic chillers and installation of a new building management system (BMS) for the entire facility.

  • The project can be replicated in similar public buildings in Mediterranean countries through the implementation of public-private-partnership contracts.

  • The opera house obtained ISO50001 certification (Energy Management) following the implementation of the energy management system in 2011. The project also helped to reduce noise pollution and water consumption as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions of 1.840 t/a.
